NORTH AMERICAN BISON
(BUFFALO)
The
North American Bison (buffalo) was the primary food source for
the Plains Indians of the "OLD WEST". Numbering in the
tens of millions (can you imagine that?) The natives utilized
every single part of the animal for food, housing, weapons, clothing,
utensils, cooking etc.
By the early 1900's the buffalo was nearly extinct due to indiscriminate
slaughter and market hunting. Many white hunters boasted about
the number (many thousand) of buffalo that they had slaughtered
just for the sport of it. Many were killed for the tongue only
which was considered a delicacy. However, they were also killed
in order to deprive the Native Americans of their primary source
of living. The native elders of today tell stories that have been
passed down from the past in describing the numbers of buffalo
saying "that it would be possible to walk across the backs
of the buffalo for hundreds of miles with your feet never touching
the ground."
The
North American Bison Society was founded in 1905 in order to secure
the survival of the bison species. Down in numbers from 40-60
million to just thirteen (13) live animals they have recovered
to about 300,000 today. With the help of many ranchers, who have
made it their mission to ensure that the bison never again becomes
an endangered species, ranchers around the world have developed
captive breeding programs and are re-introducing the animals to
the wild.
Besides
the United States and Canada the bison is also being bred in Europe.
There are herds in Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland,
and France. Hawaii also has a herd of over 3000.
It's
noted that cancer has NEVER been found in the North American Bison,
and is now being studied to find what it is that keeps them cancer
free.
